Goodbye Dark Chocolate

Exhibition, Projection

“Goodbye Dark Chocolate” presents the migration trajectory and survival challenges of Saunders’s Gulls through elongated projection, inviting viewers to gaze upward into flowing light and shadow. ”Goodbye“ in Chinese carries a dual meaning: both reunion and farewell.

Every autumn and winter, Saunders‘s Gulls migrate south from Northeast Asia to winter at Gaomei Wetlands. Before the spring breeding season, they develop black plumage on their heads and beaks, affectionately nicknamed ”Dark Chocolate“ by birdwatchers. Today, due to habitat loss, they are listed as a Vulnerable species.

During the creative process, I continuously reflected: Gaomei Wetlands itself is a product of the ”groyne effect“ from Taichung Port’s construction—this precious ecological habitat arose from an accident of human development. When human-created nature faces human threats once again, what exactly is humanity‘s role in the natural environment?

The beauty of nature can be experienced by simply walking into it. I think art can raise issues, establish perspectives, and even awaken curiosity about overlooked aspects of nature. The work uses grid lines to simulate migration routes, high-saturation color blocks that surround and engulf the silhouettes of gulls, and rhythmic soundscapes—layering elements to convey the imminent survival crisis.
