Sound Installation Performance | 2013

Self-luminous 2 is an experimental handmade instrument presented as a performance. It is a series of projects which Chang has been working on since 2013 and was finally developed in 2014. Chang was looking for an intimate and personal instrument that reflects the relationship between digital sound and light code. In the computer’s language, light-on is 1, and light-off is 0. When Chang presses the button or turns the knob, the message will be sent to Pure Data, and the sound will be triggered immediately.

The sound data, such as frequency and volume, are analyzed and sent to the second Arduino to control the light. The light, in this case, is an intuitive element for human beings. From this point, it is close to sound and disturbs our biological body directly. The lights are visualized, and they can be transferred into messages. The message might be readable by coincidence with the link to the code. The light is bright enough to let audiences have a persistent vision. The sound is reproduced by code during the performance, and part of it is impromptu.
